The U-2 is a single-seat, single-engine, high-altitude/near space reconnaissance and surveillance aircraft providing signals, imagery, and electronic measurements and signature intelligence, or MASINT. 


The U-2 is capable of gathering a variety of imagery, including multi-spectral electro-optic, infrared, and synthetic aperture radar products which can be stored or sent to ground exploitation centers.

Pembelian pertama jet tempur dari Prancis ini dilakukan Indonesia di tengah upaya merombak kekuatan alutsista udara yang menua - mencakup jet tempur F-16 buatan Amerika Serikat dan Su-27, Su-30 Sukhoi buatan Rusia. Menteri Pertahanan Prabowo Subianto telah berencana berbelanja alutsista dengan anggaran sekitar Rp1.760 triliun hingga 2024. Menurut pengamat pertahanan, pembelian pesawat-pesawat itu dilakukan ketika Indonesia sedang berusaha memperkuat pertahanannya untuk meningkatkan posisi tawar di kawasan Asia Pasifik. Menteri urusan angkaan bersenjata Prancis, Florence Parly mengatakan setelah bertemu Prabowo di Jakarta bahwa "kemitraan strategis akan meningkatkan hubungan pertahanan kedua negara".
